How long do 2-cycle 50cc scooter motors last before repairs? DiTech? Vespa better than Yamaha, Aprilla?

Is it true that 2-stroke 50cc scooter motors last only 8K-12K miles before the motor has to be overhauled? Why? What is the cost? How about 4-cycle motors? For a trouble-free ride with enough power for hilly terrain, which 50cc would you buy, and why?

What about the "clean" 2-strokes, like the $4,000 DiTech scooters -- do they last as long as 4-strokes?

If one uses synthetic oil, will a 2-cycle engine last longer? How long, before a motor repair job, in your experience?

Also, anybody try a HHO generator for a small scooter, like the one in:

http://hydrogenperformance.blogspot.com/

Also, are made-in-China or Korea scooters OK to buy?

Although 2-stroke engines will not last as long as 4-stroke that mileage figure is low- they should go a lot further than that if you maintain them properly. The first part to wear out is usually the drive belt, which needs to be changed every 10-2,000km depending on model. They cost about $30 and take 1-2 hours to install.

If you plan to ride around hilly terrain, forget about 50cc four stroke- you'll get run over. Even a two stroke 50 is dicey; spend the extra $500 and get a 125 or 150, you won't regret it.

Synthetic oil in any type of engine will improve both performance and engine life due to reduced wear.

Forget about the no-name Chinese scooters- you'll save some cash up front but they fall apart quickly and their distributors tend to disappear so you won't get parts or after-sales service. Stick to the established brands and you can't go wrong.
