Generator damaged by feedback?

My 5000 watt coleman suffered a feedback of electricity. Should I replace the rotor or stator?

Are you sure your windings are damaged? You may want to check the voltage regulator first. Then, if that is OK, you can have someone do a test called a hi-pot that will see if the stator has internal grounds. If so, that would be the most likely thing to replace, since the stator produces the current and is connected to the load where your feedback came from.

can i run my air conditioner off my dc to ac power inverter?

if i idle my truck with my 70amp alternator charging the battery can i use my 1600peak 800 watt continuous inverter to power my rv air conditioner?

I doubt it, you may overload the inverter. But you need the rating on the AC. Most are well over 800 watts, 1500 would be more like it.

And even at 800 watts, that is 70 amps from the alternator, leaving nothing to charge the battery. And I doubt the alternator will put out 70 amps at idle.

Solar Energy - Basic Principles

This article will describe how solar energy is created and cover some of its basic principles.

Solar energy is created by light and heat which is emitted by the sun, in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

With today's technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy - such as heating or electricity.

Although one could go into technical dissertations on the subject of electromagnetic radiation, how it is converted into solar energy, and the exact qualities of its electromagnetic rays, this is not something the average person needs or wants to know.

But in order to be able to benefit from the use of solar energy, there are a few facts you should know. Knowing these facts can assist you to make a sound decisions, when looking at the use of solar power as a clean energy source for your home, RV, or whatever the case may be.

Available Solar Resource

The technical feasibility and economical viability of using solar energy depends on the amount of available sunlight (solar radiation) in the area where you intend to place solar heaters or solar panels.

This is sometimes referred to as the available solar resource.

Every part of Earth is provided with sunlight during at least one part of the year. (I say "part of the year" as the north and south polar caps are each in total darkness for a few months of the year.) The amount of sunlight available is one factor to take into account when considering using solar energy.

There are a few other factors, however, which need to be looked at when determining the viability of solar energy in any given location. These are as follows:

  • Geographic location
  • Time of day
  • Season
  • Local landscape
  • Local weather

Because the Earth is round, the sun hits its surface at different angles, at different locations on the globe. This ranges from 0º (just above the horizon - a good example of this is the north pole during the winter) to 90º (directly overhead, at and near the equator).

When the sun's rays are vertical (directly overhead), the Earth's surface gets a maximum of solar energy. The more slanted the sun's rays are, the longer they have to travel through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the surface (becoming more scattered and diffuse as they go along).

The more scattered and diffuse the sun rays are, the less concentrated the solar energy is. Because of the fact that the Earth is round, the polar regions never get direct sunlight, and, during their respective winter months, they receive no sun at all.

The Earth travels around the sun, in an elliptical orbit. Because of its elliptical path, the northern hemisphere of the Earth is closer to the sun during one half of the year, and the southern hemisphere is closer during the other half of the year.

When one part of the Earth is closer to the sun, it receives more concentrated solar energy. This is the time of year that is referred to as "summer."

But regardless of summer or winter, the 23.5º tilt of the Earth's axis plays a larger role in determining the amount of sunlight striking Earth at a particular location. The Earth's tilting results in longer days in the northern hemisphere during one half the year, and longer days in the southern hemisphere during the other half of the year.

Areas such as the United States and Europe receive more solar energy between May and September - not only because days are longer, but also because the sun is almost directly overhead during this season. The sun's rays are far more slanted during the shorter days of the winter months. Cities such as Denver, Colorado, receive nearly three times more solar energy in June than they do in December.

Diffuse and Direct Sunlight

As sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, some of it is absorbed, scattered, and reflected.

The following is a general list of materials which cause the sunlight to become diffused:

  • Air Molecules
  • Water vapor
  • Clouds
  • Dust
  • Pollutants

Sunlight affected in this way is referred to as diffuse solar radiation or diffuse sunlight.

Sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface without being diffused is called direct beam solar radiation or direct sunlight.

The sum total of all diffuse and direct solar radiation in a given location is called global solar radiation. It is the total amount of sunlight hitting the Earth at any specific spot, both direct and diffuse combined.

Pollution and other atmospheric conditions (such as weather patterns) can reduce direct sunlight by 10% on clear dry days. They can reduce direct beam radiation by 100% on thick, cloudy days.

Note that the absence of direct sunlight does not imply total darkness, as some diffuse light will still get through.

Measuring Sunlight and Solar Energy

Scientists measure the amount of sunlight available in specific locations during the different times of year.

They are then able to estimate the amount of sunlight which falls on similar regions at the same latitude with similar climates and conditions.

Measurements of solar energy are normally expressed as "total radiation on a horizontal surface", or as "total amount of radiation on a surface tracking the sun".

In this last case, the assumption is that one is using a solar panel that automatically tracks the sun.

In other words, the solar panel would be mounted on a tracking device so that the panel would remain at right angles to the sun throughout the day.

This system is primarily used for industrial setups, when it is used at all.

Solar Energy Measurements

Radiation data (the amount of solar energy available at a given location) for solar electric (photovoltaic) systems is often represented as kilowatt-hours per square meter (kWh/m2). Direct estimates of solar energy may be expressed as "watts per square meter" (W/m2).

Radiation data for solar water heating and space heating systems is usually represented in British thermal units per square foot (Btu/ft2).

What power source do I need to power a 13 watt CFL bulb?

I need a battery/inverter that can power a single light bulb for long periods of time, and is able to be recharged. Most of the ones I've found so far need to be plugged into a external battery. I think I've found a suitable one:

http://www.amazon.com/Xantrex-XPower-PowerSource-Mobile-852-0281/dp/tech-data/B000HVDCZM/ref=de_a_smtd

Yet, I have no idea how to assess how long it can power the light bulb.
I would prefer for it to last for 5 to 6 hours, and be able to charge in a normal 120 v wall outlet.

A few wrong answers.

A CFL bulb runs off of 120 VAC or 240 VAC depending on where you live.

The inverter you referenced is a 100w unit, much more than you need for 1 13 watt bulb. And it does require an external battery.

Your best bet is to search for a UPS, that includes the battery and the inverter in one package. And the battery charger, which you did not mention.

I'm having trouble finding a low power UPS.

Re your question about time, a 13 watt bulb for 6 hours is about 70 watt-hours. Call it 100 for losses.

A 30 amp hour battery (a smallish lead acid sealed battery) puts out about 300 watt-hours, so it is much more than you need. A 10 or 20 amp hour battery would be OK.

edit:
I found one UPS 500 watt unit for $110

http://www.buy.com/prod/cyberpower-cp850avrlcd-ups-intelligent-lcd-diagnostic-panel-series-9/q/loc/101/204822640.html

the lowest I could find. This one can run for 30 minutes at it's full load, so at your load, it will run for many hours.

i hope there is a cheaper 100 watt unit available somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Portable power packs have been around for a while but are starting to gain in popularity; partly because their cost has come down and because they are extremely useful products. I personally own a Xantrex 300 plus and have used it on several occasions. Once on a hot summer day at a shopping mall, a fellow having a bad day ask if I could help him jump start his car.  I pulled out my Xantrex Power Pack 300, that had been in the trunk for almost a year, attached the included jumper cables to his car and volia, his is car started right up.

A portable power pack is a device that has a powerful sealed battery, an inverter, jumper cables, a DC outlet (cigarette lighter style) and an AC outlet. It also includes a bright fluorescent light with two tubes and a small pump with pressure gauge, to inflate your tires. The 20 amp hour rechargeable battery (in the 400 and 300 plus) will power a cordless telephone for up to 40 hours, a laptop for 6 hours and a portable stereo for up to 25 hours on a fully charged battery. They can be recharged from a standard wall outlet with the included AC charger.

There are several sizes of portable power packs, 300, 400 600 and 1500. The model number indicates the size of the inverter – 300 watts, 400 watts 600 watts and 1500 watts respectively. The wattage number is also the amount of peak AC power that is available. Each size has a battery with a different amp hour rating. The 300 and 400 have a 20 amp hour battery. The 600 has a 28 amp hour battery and the 1500 has a 51 amp hour battery. It is not quite as portable as the other models but packs a considerable punch. All of the batteries in all of the models are sealed and will not spill. All of the power packs include a handle and are very portable. The 300 plus only weighs 20 pounds but the 1500 weighs in at whopping 60 pounds. That is why the 1500 is the only model with wheels.

All of the power packs have the same basic features but the models with higher numbers include additional features. The 400R includes a radio. The 600HD includes a radio, digital alarm clock and multiple AC outlets. There is even a model with a detachable solar panel. Just a little research into what features and how much power you might need will pay off in the long run.

Portable power packs are great to use as emergency back up power to jump start a car or to light up an area on a dark road. They will keep a cell phone or a GPS charged up with out draining the car battery. There are also a lot of uses that are just plain fun. Take one along to the summer little league game and plug a fan into it. Take one camping and plug an electric cook top into it or use it for extra light. They can power a stereo for a tailgate or any other outdoor party. If you use a laptop out in the field, take one along to greatly extend your battery life. The power packs are really not all that expensive with pricing starting around $140. Throw one in the trunk of your car and you will be prepared for just about anything.

Coleman generator 1850 Watts

what is the retail value of a coleman powermate mega pulse 1850 watt generator?

why do they call it a mega pulse and is it a good generator

Used in perfect condition probably between $50 and $150. New around $200.Coleman I think went out of business so you are on your own for parts. In generators (gas powered) only buy B&S, or Honda. because the motor is what go's out first.
