The generator on our RV will turn over but it won't start can some please help?


Think fire. You need three things for the engine to run. Heat, Oxygen, Fuel.

Heat is supplied by the spark plug. It will ignite the fuel. Remove the plug and check for spark while turning over the engine. No spark could be from a fouled spark plug or a failed ignition module. It may be a good time to put in a new spark plug if it hasn't been changed recently.

Oxygen is needed for combustion. Make sure the air filter isn't plugged and preventing air from entering the carburetor. Try starting the engine with the filter removed. It may be a good time to install a new filter if the old one is dirty or hasn't been changed in a long time.

Fuel. Ensure a proper flow of gasoline into the carburetor. You may have a blocked fuel filter. Otherwise if the engine hasn't been running for several months and wasn't stored properly you may have the carburetor gummed up with stale gas. Remove the carburetor for a thorough cleaning. It may need a rebuild kit in extreme conditions.

In my experience with small engines, improper storage is the major cause of carburetor failure. When you have the engine working again, always use fuel stabilizer to reduce gumming up the carburetor. Run the engine every month or two for half an hour to keep it exercised. When shutting down for an extended period turn off the gas and let it run dry.

Change the oil every 25 hours running time or at least once per year. I always change oil in my small engines at the end of the operating season regardless of running time. Fall for the lawnmower, spring for the snowblower and generator. That will remove water and other contaminants from the engine and reduce problems during storage. The engines alway fire up right away after bringing out for use again.

How To Buy The Right Generator For Your RV

How do you know what size generator you need for your RV?  This primer by RVBasics is an excellent overview of the basics, plus a few thoughts of my own.

To determine the proper size generator for your RV you need to know how much electrical power you will use.

1. Determine what electrical devices you will want to run from the generator. Survey your RV for appliances that run on 120 volts. TV, microwave and other kitchen appliances generally require the most power but smaller appliances can add up. Most RV lights are 12 volt but some may be 120 volt. Your RV A/C is the biggest power user.

2. Add up the power requirements, in watts, for all the devices that you are likely to operate at the same time. Wattage ratings are printed on light bulbs; other devices like hair dryers and electric heaters are also described by their wattage requirements. If the device doesn't provide a wattage requirement, you can determine watts by multiplying volts times amps. Be aware that some electrical devices have starting wattage requirements that are larger than the running watts. If so, use the starting wattage requirement for the largest of the devices you want to run and the running watts for all other devices.

3. Add together the wattage requirements for all the electrical devices that you want to use at the same time. This is the minimum wattage you will need from a generator. You should also consider a generator with a power rating somewhat higher than your minimum requirement. It's is possible to get along with a smaller generator if you don't really need to run everything at the same time. But you're not likely to want to turn off the TV when you use the microwave.

When it comes to RV generators, cheaper is not always better.   You want the generator to last as long as the RV, basically, so stick with quality brands to get the most durability from the your RV generator.  And, of course, noise is an important consideration since many campgrouns have noise limitations, so always try to hear the new RV generator running before you make a purchase decision.

are you a camper, who happens to own an RV, that tries to run your generator as little as possible?

(just got back from a few weeks of camping & i'll tell ya'. - i just don't get it. if i wanted to tailgate, i'd go to a charger game)

MARK M: nah, i hear what you're saying. i expect & don't mind that sort of stuff. i kept trying to think how crummy i'd feel if they had ol' gramma who had to have an oxygen tank inside - but these guys had these tiki torch things running & prissy wives who spent alot of time getting ready...
...and the guys were the type who had to have the biggest, loudest everything. i don't know... maybe because it was around Independence Day...
...i've come to the conclusion (after venting) that is was, indeed, the prissy wives.

Obviously you had some issues from your last trip. As for me I do it all I have the monster size toy hauler RV with all the bells an whistles and when your "camped" out in the Glamis desert for the weekend you want all that the ac, the radios, whatever you want and run all the power from a 7000 watt generator 24hrs a day.

Now I also have a "light" trailer and with a small generator and use solar cells on top, I use that for my hunting camp. I'll use the generator only if it was too cloudy to power up the solar generator to recharge the batteries. I have a Ham radio base station in the rig and gmrs radios to keep in touch with the hunting party. I will also camp at regular campgrounds with this to have the creature comforts for me and the wife who decorates everything including the campsite but quite often wherever I have been it's been the tent campers that made the worst rackets all night and disturbed the whole campground.

I also will back pack into wilderness areas to camp solo or with a limited party. But again it's the city slicker wannabe that brings the loud radio to the mountains and ruins it for me.

My point is if you don't like the way other people camp then your a busy body with nothing else better to do and as long as their not disturbing the peace and I agree running a loud generator is disturbing the peace and a loud radio. You really have nothing to complain about. Next time move your self to a wilderness campground where you won't have to look at RVs and bring a gun to shoot the radio.

4000 watt generator for 30 amp 120v RV?


The factory cable on my travel trailer is 30amp 120v = 3600watt capacity. I'm considering purchasing a 4000w propane generator, but it has two 120v 15amp outlets. I tested my neighbor's 5500 watt generator using one of its 120v 15amp receptacles with my travel trailer (I bought a 15amp to 30amp adapter for $5 at WalMart) - but the AC kept tripping the generator fuse. What is my best option? Find a generator wired for 120v 30amps? Rewire the one I'm going to buy?

4000w will be over the capacity that your rv can handle, so you should step it down just a notch. The reason your ac kept setting off the breaker is because you didnt have enough amps for it to run on. What you need to look for is a 120v 30amp generator in the 3000-3600w range. Anything higher can and will fry some of the electronics inside the rv. My family owns a small deer camp and we have electrical outlets to run our campers on. when we initially put in the power the electrician accidently put us on the 220v line and we had to replace everything that was plugged in.

RV Generators Make the Wild Blue Yonder a Bit More Homey

 

Ah, the call of the wild blue yonder. What better way to heed the call than in a home on wheels? RV's have long been the transport of choice for travelers who really want to experience everything the world has to offer. Nevertheless, there are bound to be a few stories worth sharing not because of the magnificent vistas seen or great world-saving work done, but for the sheer ridiculousness of the experience. Don't worry, I would never set you up like that and not deliver. Luckily for you, and rather unluckily for me, I've had a good number of RV experiences to fit that bill.

One of the first trips I took in an RV where I had some semblance of responsibility other than choosing the television channel was to a park in eastern Montana. I went to go pick out the spot in the park where we were planning on staying for a week or so, and I found the most beautiful location. It was lined with trees, overlooking a beautiful valley, and really just epitomized the wonder of nature. We brought the RV over, and suddenly, the tree-lined edges were much closer together than they had been a few minutes earlier. The beautiful valley the space overlooked really only meant that we had to park the RV on the edge of a cliff, and all that wonder of nature stuff was no longer very magical. Three hours later, we finally got situated on the "scenic overlook" and started to make dinner. Well, we tried to start making dinner. Somehow we managed to overlook the fact that there was no electrical hookup in the park. Just about then, the RV started to teeter perilously on the cliff. Needless to say,  I have not been allowed to choose a space again.

While there isn't much we could have done about the width of the space or the height of the cliff (that we managed to avoid falling off of, by the way), we definitely could have avoided the problem of no electricity. Little did we know at the time, RV generators are something that no recreational vehicle should ever be left without. Not only that, but backup or RV generators can be used in other situations as well, not just the RV. They can be used at jobsites, during camping trips, and especially at your home. Power outages are always inconvenient, but at least with a generator you will be able to keep your refrigerated and frozen food from spoiling, cook your meals, and run other necessary items. They're light and easy to handle, making them perfect for use in your RV (obviously), as well as anywhere else you need it.
