I need an inverter in my RV to run my laptop computer off of the 12VDC system when not plugged into 120VAC. I have an extra UPS that I think I can configure to run off of 12VDC and be able to plug the laptop AC adapter into. I am afraid to use a cheapo inverter due to the true versus modified sine wave issue and figure the UPS puts out a true sine wave 120VAC since it is built to power computers. Is this doable and should I leave the batteries in place or remove them and just jump the wires?
your overthinking the problem... you have an R/V with a 12VDC battery. you have a laptop which runs on DCV you have a power supply for the laptop which inverts AC from a wall socket and outputs a measured amount of DCV into the laptop to charge the battery. remove the cord from the laptop with the power supply plugged into the wall and use a DC voltmeter to measure the output at the plug where it connects with the computer. Obtain or build a single tap transformer which will stepdown the 12VDC from your RV battery into a DCV suitable for the laptop. cut the cord off the power supply and plug one end back into the laptop and wire the other end up to the transformer. just make sure the stepdown the stepdown transformer is capable of handling the current flow which is usually marked on the power supply cut the cord in a fashion you can add a male/female connector and use it back at the house when your not on the road
