When preparing this article I came across this anonymous quote:
"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It know it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle...when the sun comes up, you'd better be running."
I think I've seen it before, but considering where we are in the RV business today it seemed to fit.
So, what about this "money lying in the streets of the RV business"? Well, it comes from my personal observations in travelling the country training RV sales people and managers over the last 4 years. Some of us just "aren't running when the sun comes up". At the end of every class, I ask everyone what they got of training today. There usually is always one who says, "I realized today that I need to work harder". Eureka! (I found it!).
This isn't that hard if....if we step back and take an objective look at what we do everyday. The actual actions that we take, realizing that high quality action produces high quality results.

How to have a 13 and 1/2 month year.

If your year was longer would you make more money year to date? Of course. Short of discovering time travel, where can you pick up more time? Several weeks ago I told you we all wake up with the same thing; 1440 minutes that look us in the eye and say "What are you going to do with me?" The reality of the RV business, at least for salespeople, is that most of us only work 2-3 hours per day, tops. I know because that's what I did when I was on the line. You may be the exception, however, I work with a lot of salespeople across the country and it isn't any different no matter where you are. So what do you do with the other 6-8 hours per day? Would you be willing to accept a raise in income in exchange for some of that down time? Just work 1 more hour per day. That's it. Don't ADD it to your day, just WORK another hour of that 6-8 you don't do anything. Why is that such a big deal? Just do the math.

1 hour per day of productive work x 5 days a week = 5 hours per week.
5 hours per week x 4 weeks a month = 20 hours per month.
20 hours per month x 12 months per year = 240 hours per year.
240 hours / 40 hours a week = 6 weeks.
6 weeks of productivity every year. Let that sink in a minute.....
That's how you get 13 1/2 months out of a year.

Why is this so important? Look at what we actually do in RV sales today.
If we're actually working 3 hours a day x 5 days a week = 15 hours per week.
15 hours x 4 weeks x 12 months = 720 hours per year.
Actual "full time" jobs = 2000 hours per year.
Yes, I know you probably work longer on weekends and when you have good floor traffic, but take your actual working with a fresh up out of the equation and you will understand what I'm talking about. It's the rest of our time we need to look at.
If you show me what you do with your "spare" time in the RV business, I'll show you what you're going to make next year.

You see sometimes it's not what you're doing, it's what your not doing. I know from first hand experience that it is easy to do nothing in RV sales or any type of commission sales. Remember that pain/pleasure thing we talked about last time? It applies here in a huge way because it affects your income and your ability to take care of yourself and your family.
Bottom line, work harder. This takes Self-Discipline, one of the 35 keys to being a Top Producer in the RV business. It also takes a daily written plan of action, another key. It takes alot of things we teach in our RV sales training classes.
You've heard, "The harder I work, the luckier I get".
LUCK = Laboring Under Correct Knowledge. With emphasis on laboring.

When you can you start with your new found productivity? How about right now?
How about 20 minutes on product knowledge, 20 minutes on selling skills and 20 minutes on a positive mental attitude. Mix it up depending on your experience level. Do part of it yourself, and get your teammates involved in part of it.
Is there any reason you can't WORK another hour today?
You don't have to come in earlier, or stay later. Just come to work to work.
If you throw 240 hours of focused effort at anything, you will improve and get results. You will feel better, make more, which will make you feel better, which will make you more.... you get the picture.
Unlike many other sales trainers out there today, I spent many years on the line selling RV's. I felt best and made more when I was busy doing something.

Just Sell On Purpose and like the lion in Africa, wake up tomorrow, kill something, and eat it.

Portable Rv Generators

RV Generators - How do I transform a portable generator into an RV generator?

I never get a straight answer about this.

I want to save my money and get a "portable" 7000 watt gas generator by Onan, instead of one that's waaaaaay more expensive and made "specifically" for Rv's.. and to put it into the compartment where it's current old one is.

I want to be able to fuel the portable generator as if it is an RV generator by taking the main gas line and connecting it to the portable generator some how. How do I do that? Do I just connect the main RV fuel line to the portable generator's fuel line, and it will just naturally suck the gas it needs and not be a problem? Or do I need a more complicated set up??? I just need to know that part, it's pretty obvious that the electrical connections can be dealt with.

Thanks.

To answer this question correctly, we need A LOT more info, but i will try to point you in the right direction.

First, most portable generators are much larger (in size that is) than fixed generators. So i ask, will this one fit in the compartment?

Most portable generators are air cooled, while many (not all) "RV" generators are liquid cooled. Will this compartment allow enough air flow to keep the generator at a safe operating temperature?

Next, comes the noise and exhaust ventilation. The on-board rv style generators have a extensive exhaust system to help muffle the noise and vent the harmful fumes/gases outside of the rv.

As for the fuel hook-up's, most portable generator engines, are gravity fed. That's why the gas tank sits on top. So if your fuel line is below the generator, it will not get any fuel, therefore it will not run. If you tap into the RVs fuel line to fuel your generator how much extra fuel line will you need to run? Too much line may hinder the vehicles fuel pump from supplying the required amount of fuel for the vehicles engine. If the fuel system on your portable generator is a gravity set-up, and you tap into the vehicles fuel line, you would have to run the vehicles fuel pump to supply the fuel to your generator. If that is the case, will the portable generator's carburetor be able to handle the amount of fuel pressure the vehicles pump puts out? The answer is most likely NO.

I could go on and on, but the truth is if you couldn't answer your own question about hooking it up, chances are you shouldn't even attempt such a procedure. Leave the complicated stuff to the professionals, especially if you don't know what you're doing. If you try this yourself and get it wrong, it could end-up costing you anywhere from the price of your generator to the price of you RV, and even as far as your life.

My suggestion to you is this, save up and buy the rv specific generator for your unit, or buy the portable one and haul it with your rv. Once you get where you are going, place it 10-15 away from your rv, hook it up to your outside, auxiliary power-in cord, and voila you now have power!

Companies, large or small, normally purchase pre-owned or low-hour used generators. Because, it is assumed they are cost-effective and tested. However, the following tips can ensure right purchase after making the choice from single, three phase, wattage, voltage, self start, motor starting, etc.:

Age
While buying a pre-owned car, the mileage is checked from the odometer. The Generators are also motor driven and hence the age and the usage can be checked. Normally, standby generators are less used than the one connected to the prime power. When the set is not supported with such meters, the reputation of the seller and their technical expertise is important. The seller's knowledge can be measured by asking the procedures they use – installation and de-installation, dyno-testing equipments, etc.

Brand
The make of the Generator definitely illustrate its performance. A well known brand with specific quality certifications ensures safety. Of course, proper maintenance by the user is implied. Reputed firms like Cummins, Wartsila, Kohler, Caterpillar and a handful of others are safe bet. Buying from unknown brands is taking a big chance.

Physical Inspection
Like any other machinery, the generators go through wear and tear. All the mechanical components need to be checked. If any of the parts are replaced with different brand spares, affirmation should be obtained if the same were done by qualified technicians. Check for any welding and undue windings. From a safety point of view, the bearings, bushings, bolts, nuts, etc., replacement ensures smooth functioning of the generator.

Load Test
A load test helps to measure the efficiency of the Generator. Based on the response of the Generator on the varying loads, its efficiency is estimated. The test should check for proper and steady output and frequency. The tests need to be conduced two or three times to ensure there are not power breakdowns.

Selling Party
It is obvious we see generator up for sale in the classifieds, on eBay, and so forth. But, generators are complex and finely tuned machinery that needs tested by certified technicians to ensure optimum efficiency and be there when it is needed most. Always going with a professional organization having years of industry experience is better choice. End-user to end-user transactions may be avoided if proper assessment techniques are at lapse.

Guarantees and Warranties
Since the pre-owned generators may not have longer guarantee and warranty periods as balance, at least check for having 30 to 60 days.
