Norcold Refrigerator
120 volt converter to 12/24 volts , is this possible ?
I have a Norcold DC Refrigerator that I would like to install in my home. I thought I could simply hook up a stepdown transformer for this purpose but I'm told by Norcold I will need to connect a battery charger to a battery in order for me to do this . The explananation I have heard is that the battery acts as a filter .....
If it's a filter I need then cant I just install a stepdown transformer to a filter ? And if yes, what kind of filter ? any ideas ?
I don't want a rube goldberg contraption ....I really need a high level solution .

There are power supplies available that will have a filtered DC output that would not need a battery connected. Wilmore makes very good supplies that are used when high reliability is required, but are expensive.
A DC power supply normally has some "ripple" voltage present on its output. The better the filter in the power supply, the less ripple in the output.
A battery charger sometimes does not have the best filtering. The output can have a high AC component, that can damage DC powered equipment. I have seen this happen when a 125VDC battery bank had an open cell. The nominal charging voltage for the bank was 132.5VDC, but with the bad battery connected I was reading voltage spikes up to about 190 volts. Most of the equipment at the site was undamaged, but we did lose 125VDC to 24VDC converter with lots of smoke! After the bad cell in battery bank was replaced, the output voltage of the charger had less that a volt of ripple.
Battery chargers are designed to be connected to a battery. A battery has filtering effect and looks like a big capacitor to the chargers output.
If you are not going to connect a battery to a battery charger, use a power supply. A power supply is designed to be used without a battery connected to it's output. Of course you will need to select a power supply with adaquet capacity for the job.
