Does anyone currently live off grid? If so, what type of alternate power system(s) are you using?
Solar? ---(I think very expensive and in this part of the country, not enough sun.)
Hydro-electric? ---(may be a viable choice if I have enough current running through my stream and or enough head from a waterfall)
Wind? --- (If It is installed high enough and does not obscure.)
Diesel Generator---(may be ok if underground, low speed, water cooled)
We are planning to build a log home in up-state Pa. as a second home for now, but our primary residence in a few years.
Thanks in advance for your answers! Newt
i don't know about your possibilities where you are but i would definitely suggest using as much natural lighting as possible and the alternate wood heating furnaces available
power Tongue Jack How do you think the roles that men and women portrayed in movies in the 1940-1950' differ from today?
Hey, I was watching a movie from 1949 on TCM the night before called All The Kings Men. It was a fictional portrayal of a simple country man named Willie Stark and his destructive rise to power. He was a simple plain talking bumbling clod that because mega charismatic with the help of a pushy wife and a pushier secretary. The movie showed the secretary (the focus of my question) as a strong sassy sharp-tongue woman that helped mold the Willie into a force to be reckoned with but she ended up falling in love with him and turning into a whimpering follow behind her man door mat. I watch the previews for another movie years ago that came out in the 1950's staring Jack Palance where he beats on his woman and the movie portrayed him as sexy and viral. Do you think either of these roles could be put on screen today? Hey, it says she was married twice and was straight

Movie roles have gone from distinct masculine and feminine roles to fuzzy androgynous ones. Somewhere along the line, Hollywood has confused liberation with sameness.
While others are searching for that elusive 90% (supposedly) unused brain power, it is possible for you to go directly to the seat of the mind within you and find it quicker than anyone else. Just the mere revelation of this knowledge should make you want to dance in the street as you prepare to tackle the world around you with a new perspective. Let’s take a look.
We humans regard ourselves as living, physical entities capable of intellectual and emotional expression as supposedly generated by our brain by means of our mind, which, in turn, we presume forms an integral part of the brain. In assured fashion, we would at times go so far as to point at our head with one finger to indicate that we are busy thinking – simply because it feels like it’s all happening up there. Fallacy!
What if you were told that the human brain is empowered by the spirit within you for the sole purpose of controlling the bodily functions of the physical part of our make-up and that it has no conscious intellectual or emotional capabilities – let alone contain a memory database? As far out as this may seem, it is fact.
Inside of our human spirit is an area referred to as the heart. This is where it all happens. And this is where the true you is reflected. Your heart encompasses the consciousness and individuality of your human spirit and seats your intellect and emotions. Your personality, in its totality, is located here and it is reflected to the world you live in. How?
Enter the chief executive officer of your heart – your mind. This baby hugs your heart like the mouse to your computer. However, this guy can be mischievous. Like an ethereal roamer around the heart he is supposed to do the honourable thing and reflect the good things of the heart to the world. Your heart contains all the good, as well as bad things that it has absorbed since entering the world. All of your physical senses have gathered information and channelled it to your heart via a conduit, called the brain.
Your physical body is, in effect, your heart’s window to the material world. And the heart of your spirit has an unlimited capacity for the storage of information and memory. This is where dreams and ideas are conjured up and processed based on its massive database of knowledge. The decision-maker, the mind, takes what is in the heart and decides how to portray it or apply it to circumstances. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:†(Prov. 23:7) This certainly tells us where all of man’s thinking takes place.
This “chief executive officer†of your spirit, the mind, acts as the spokesperson for your heart. What this spokesperson says, you get. Your brain stands at attention waiting for instructions from the mind to express the whims of the mind by means of the tongue and physical body. Talk about the power of the tongue. This lad is nothing more than the mouthpiece for the inner mind to the natural world. And now you also know why it feels like all our deliberations take place in that cavity filled by the brain.
Depending on the condition of the mind, it can either be honest or maliciously deceitful. What comes out of your mouth is the voice of the mind of your spirit. Aggression, bitterness, hate, love, joy and peace are all items of knowledge stored in the heart as a result of experiences picked up in our world. Your mind decides what to extract from the heart and present to the world. It can make or break those around you – and it can also make or break you as an individual.
Your heart and your mind are bosom buddies. They are all that you have. They are you. If you renew your mind to take only the good things of the heart, you’ll have a synergy that can conquer and overcome the world – turning war into peace and failure into success. And if your heart is filled with the substance and Person of Jesus Christ, you cannot fail.
Guess what? You have discovered where that 90% has been lurking all the time and you are now in a position to saddle it and ride it.
Now that you know all of this, go ahead and dance in the street, but not for too long. What will the neighbours think?

Owning an RV certainly comes with as many responsibilities if not more than in owning a vehicle. Failing to winterize an RV can cause unpleasant surprises come spring. If lines aren’t properly flushed and systems cleaned out, freezing temperatures can cause expansion and damages, leading to contamination and costly repairs.
To winterize your RV you can either do it your self or hire a certified RV technician.
For those do-it-yourself types, here are a few things you will need before getting started.
• Non-toxic RV antifreeze (The amount depends on the layout and length of your plumbing lines. Two to three gallons will normally do).
• A water heater by-pass kit, if not already installed.
• A wand to clean out holding tanks.
• A water pump converter kit, or tubing to connect to the inlet side of the water pump.
• Basic hand tools to remove drain plugs.
Now to go through the steps of preparing your RV for winter. • If you have any inline water filters remove and bypass before starting.
• Drain the fresh water holding tank.
• Drain and flush the gray and black holding tanks. If your RV doesn’t have a built in tank flushing system clean the black tank out with a wand, or use a product like Flush King that allows you to clean both the black and gray tanks. Lubricate the termination valves with WD 40.
• Drain the water heater. Remove the drain plug and open the pressure relief valve. CAUTION (never drain the water heater when it is hot or under pressure)
• Open all hot and cold faucets; don’t forget the toilet valve and outside shower.
• Locate and open the low point drain lines. There will be one for the hot and cold water lines. Using the water pump will help force water out, but turn it off as soon as the system is drained.
• Recap all drains and close all faucets.
• By-pass the water heater. If you do not have a by-pass kit installed the water heater will fill up with antifreeze before it goes through the water lines, wasting six gallons of antifreeze.
• Install a water pump converter kit, or disconnect the inlet side of the water pump (the line coming from the fresh water holding tank). Connect a piece of clear tubing to the inlet side of the pump and put the other end into a one gallon container of non-toxic RV antifreeze.
• Turn the water pump on and pressurize the system. Starting with the closest faucet, slowly open the hot and then cold valves until antifreeze appears. Replace the antifreeze container as required.
• Repeat this process on all faucets from the closest to the farthest away. Don’t forget the outside shower, if equipped.
• Flush the toilet until antifreeze appears.
• Turn the water pump off and open a faucet to release the pressure. Go outside to the city water inlet. Remove the small screen over the inlet and push in on the valve with a small screwdriver until you see antifreeze. Replace the screen.
• Pour a cupful of antifreeze down each drain. Pour a couple of cups in the toilet and flush into the holding tank.
• If your water heater has an electric heating element make sure it is turned off. This will protect the element if the unit is plugged in while being stored.
• Make sure all the faucets are closed.
• Consult your owner manuals for winterizing icemakers and washing machines.
That's it you're done! That wasn't so bad was it? Now remove your batteries for winter storage!

There are various types of water heaters manufactured by various companies, but the RV water heater is an appliance manufactured for use with propane gas. They range from sizes suitable for heating 6 gallon to 10 gallon units. They operate on gas as well as with 120 Volt AC.
Rheem is one of the manufacturers who could be trusted for obtaining the ultimate result from your water heater. They are manufacturers of suburban RV water heaters that range between 3, 6, and 10 gallon capacities.
They have standard gas models for industrial standards as well as for domestic use. There are options for you to choose electric models as well that have added performance of 1,440 watt elements at campsites.
The Rheem Suburban RV water heaters are reliable and offer simple operation. The metal used in these water heaters is porcelain since heated water attacks all other metals except porcelain. By using this metal the life of the RV water heater is longer than its competitors.
The ignition options on the RV water heaters manufactured by Rheem offer simple and reliable operations where the pilot can be lit manually. When the weather is not favorable owners would prefer to have automatic models with spark ignition that electronically controls the RV water heater.
Rheem has left no stone unturned in the manufacture of water heaters for domestic purpose as well. The RV Rheem water heaters are suitable for camp houses, mobile homes, and trailers. Since it is a compact unit it is very easy to install. You can install the RV water heater wherever you have a 110 volt power supply facility.
RV’s heating effects are of high quality since it has a patented R-foam insulation process that offers superior heat retention thus making the unit more energy efficient.
