Think fire when troubleshooting your engine. Three things are required for fire - fuel, oxygen, heat. The same three are essential to make your engine work.

Another critical point is that everything must be clean! A tiny spec of dirt is enough to either plug the carburetor or keep the float valve open causing gasoline to continue flowing uncontrolled. If the dirt makes it way into the engine it could score the cylinder wall, causing permanent damage. It will reduce compression and horsepower capability, increase oil consumption, and cause higher emissions.

New gas and spark plug may not help if there are other existing problems.

The carburetor mixes fuel and air. Take it apart and ensure it is clean. Use carburetor cleaning spray through every port and orifice. Make sure the float moves freely and the needle valve is not plugged. There should be no film or varnish anywhere. Every surface must be pristine. Fuel should flow freely into the bowl and shut off as it gets full. Use compressed air to blow gently over the top of the jet and you should see a spray of fuel. If you don't have a fuel filter get one installed right away. It's pointless to clean the carburetor only to let dirt from the fuel tank enter and mess it up again.

The air filter needs to be clean. Remove it entirely from the engine for testing, and install a clean filter if needed.

Heat is supplied by the spark plug. Remove the spark plug. Make sure it is clean. Dirt inside could prevent the spark from forming. Plug it into the cable and hold against the engine casing. Pull the starter cord and you should see sparks at the gap. No spark means you need to fix the ignition system.

Once you get these things taken care of the engine should work very well. Now that it's working don't neglect routine maintenance. You should change the oil in the crankcase every 50 hours or at least annually, regardless of running time. Oil change time is also a good time to put in a new spark plug. Always use Stabyl or other gasoline additive to prevent gumming up of the carburetor.

how to start a new generator?


i brought it a year and a half ago but never had any use for it. i finally pulled it out of the box and tried
to start it. i wouldnt start. it has no primer button. i put gas and oil in it. i put a little gas in the carburator and it still would not star. it is a coleman portable power generator. what else can i do.
i made sure the the on switch, choke and gas switch was on

Make sure the oil level is correct. Many small engines have a low oil shut off that will prevent the engine from running without enough oil. If you are absolutely certain the level is ok, try removing the wire from the oil sensor. The sensor could be faulty and preventing the spark plug from firing. If it runs with the wire removed ensure you get the sensor replaced.

Three things are needed to get the engine running.
Air. With a new generator chances are the air filter is clean.
Fuel. The fuel must get through the carburetor and sprayed as a mist into the engine.
Heat. The spark plug must fire at the right time for ignition to occur.

Remove the spark plug from the engine. Plug it into the wire and hold against the chassis of the engine. Pull the starter cord and look for spark. If there is no spark you may need a new spark plug or even an ignition coil. Without spark it will not work. Put the plug back in.

Remove the air filter so you can look into the carburetor while trying to start the engine. Watch the jet valve to see if fuel is spraying out the top. If the fuel does not spray out you may have a blockage in the carburetor or the float valve may not be working.

Place your hand over the air intake of the carburetor while turning the engine over. You should feel a strong vacuum suction during the intake stroke.

I would like to quiet a loud Coleman Powermate 5000 generator. What may I use to quiet the Briggs & Stratton e


Those things are noisy! I had a DevilBiss GT5000 with a similar engine / muffler combination. My Generac 5500XL makes less noise, but can still easily be heard inside the house.

Choose an operating location as far away as possible. Note that a larger gauge wire is needed to reduce voltage drop as line length increases. Reducing line loss is required to minimize power loss and to ensure maximum power is available to the house. Lights will flicker less when heavy loads are attached.

Change the exhaust system. Noise from the portable generator systems comes primarily from two sources, the engine block and the exhaust system. With an air cooled engine there is little you can do about block noise. Some engines can have a larger muffler attached or make other changes to the exhaust system. Merely mounting exhaust pipe vertically will noticeably reduce noise.

Build a noise shielding enclosure. This could be as simple as a piece of plywood to reflect sound away from the house to a separate shed to hold the generator. Design your enclosure with safety in mind. Provide adequate air circulation and ventilation to prevent heat buildup and to remove carbon monoxide.

If the noise bothers your neighbors, invite them over for coffee or offer to run line to their home to power the freezer or a few lights. Talk to them before starting the engine, ask they let you know if the noise is bothersome before they phone the police or harbor any resentment. A little diplomacy can go a long way.

Last resort, shut off the engine or buy a quiet generator.

What is the no-load voltage supposed to be on a portable gas generator?


I just bought a used Coleman Maxa 5000 gas generator with a 10HP Tecumseh engine. I measured the output at no load and it was 140V. I plugged in my shopvac which brought the engine speed down to 120V. Turned off the shopvac and the output went back up to 140V. I am worried about damaging overvoltage and surge when I actually need to use the generator. Is this the way it's supposed to be? If not, how can I "slow" the engine down? Thanks for any help.

That generator does NOT have AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) nor is it an inverter type.

What this means is there is no electronic voltage regulation circuitry in the alternator and the voltage from the alternator is only controlled by means of a mechanical governor on the engine.

An inverter or AVR type generator would give 120V even under no load.

The generator you have there is only suited to non sensitive electrical devices such as power tools, electric motor stuff like your shopvac, standard fridge and freezer and so on.

Do NOT use that generator on sensitive electrical devices like computers, plasma TV’s, etc as damage can easily occur from over voltage spikes.
