are coleman generators considered top of the line?
if not what are their drawbacks
Honda brand generators are actually inverter based and are of very high quality, there are a number of generator manufacturers that use Honda engines but they are not the same as the Honda generator systems. Honda engines are top notch and reliable as hell, but the off brand ones use a conventional alternator head which must operate at the same engine speed to maintain frequency stability but as the generator is loaded the engine will slow down, changing the frequency and voltage output. the Honda generators however use a DC generator head feeding an inverter and they throttle the engine up and down to maintain optimum loading of the engine and optimum fuel efficiency and the electronics takes care of the voltage and frequency stability.
The Coleman units use a conventional alternator head and either a Honda/Subaru/Greyhound engine (all three are the exact same engine) or a Briggs and Stratton engine. They are fairly generic in design. The biggest issue will be finding replacement brushes for the alternator head and replacement rubber shock absorbers for the engine mounts. those are the two big wear items, Also the air cleaner/filters for Honda enginess aren't that terribly easy to find unless you go to a lawn and garden equipment store. They aren't found at your local Lowes or Home Depot very often.
