RVs have become one of the safest and most popular vehicles of Americans in recent years. Many RVers even think of dumping off their property and lead a roaming life in their luxurious RVs. If cost of maintenance prompts the RVers to think on such lines, they are then highly mistaken in their notion. It is absolutely wrong to assume that RVs require zero maintenance- it might not be as great as maintaining a house, yet even your RV needs some attention!

The RV part that requires greater attention is the roof. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the roof is very essential for your RV. The frequency of cleaning it will depend upon the place you are in. For example, if your RV is in an arid region like Arizona, it will require less cleaning. But its tyres will require greater attention, as they would get drier on account of the hot and dusty weather. Most RV roofs are relatively flat and made of rubber. Absence of roof slopes allows the dirt to stand still and hence needs to be cleaned up at regular intervals.

RV roofs should be cleaned with lots of care and it is highly necessary to follow the roof manufacturer's recommendations. It's advisable to use soft scrubber and bleach while cleaning your RV roof. The bleach is quite effective in removing any mildew and whitening the rubber but make sure it is not abrasive. Wipe the roof gently with a soft scrubber to let the grime off. Spread the bleach and allow it to stay for a few minutes. The next step is just as easy, for all you need to do is spray cool water through a hose and wash off all the dirt.

There is one very important thing before you take up the entire task. Prior to taking up the cleaning work, you should make sure that the weather is sunny and dry because your RV roof needs to dry up after being cleaned up with cool water. Following this, the roof is to be coated with an UV/rubber protection (recommended by your RV manufacturer). Sudden spell of rain can make all your efforts vain. So make sure to conduct your cleaning business at the right time.

Besides maintaining your RV roof, there are several factors to be taken into consideration if you are planning to store your RV for the winter. Following are some of the points to remember before allowing your RV to hibernate:

1. Switch off any pilot lights followed by propane at the source.

2. Do not forget to drain all water from rig: hot water tank, fresh water tank and all lines both hot and cold.

3. Turn the refrigerator off. Defrost it and wipe dry. Leave the fridge doors propped open slightly. This will allow some air circulation and keep down mildew. You might put an open box of baking soda in the fridge to help keep odors at bay.

4. Seal all outside openings to prevent critters from invading your rig and making a home.

5. Leave a window and a roof vent open just a bit. Open a window as far away from the vent as possible to allow some air to circulate the entire rig.

6. It is advisable to keep the tires off and use wood pads or Teflon pads after parking your rig.

7. Disconnect your RV's battery. It's always better to disconnect both terminals. In extreme weather conditions, take the battery out and store it in a moderate climate.

8. Make sure to clean and cover the air conditioner. You can use a heavy plastic bag or covers that are easily made available by most RV dealers.

9. Wash and wax your vehicle to prevent dirt build-up on your newly painted RV.

These little tips can see your RV motorhome in good health for a long time. Many RVers might now think that RV maintenance is a wearisome task. But this is not the case. It's definitely convenient to maintain your RV motorhome than your house- its doors, windows, lawns, gardens and much more! This too might have accounted for the increasing popularity and sale of RV motorhomes in recent years. So live with the pride of owning a luxurious RV but do not forget 'nurture' it- i.e. to maintain it!

ANY BODY WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT FRIDGES AND RV's?


Ok so i was using my dad's RV but the Fridge stopped working. I didn't do anything to it. I was wondering if there was anything i can do it myself before he fusses at me? The Fridge is just not producing cold air and the food's going bad... there is electricity going, the tv works, the air conditioner works.. PLEASE HELP
my dad says it doesn't run on propane because the light on it was blinking and he said it had nothing to do with it

It probably run on propane. Look in all the little compartments around the outside of the RV. Get it fill and you'll be good to go.

Inspecting a travel trailer is not an easy task but you have come a long way already because you chose the type of travel trailer you would like to buy. You know the size, the type of layout and the amount of money you would like to spend.

When it comes to inspecting a trailer, do not let your emotions get in the way of your needs. Have a checklist of the things that are important to you when looking at a potential travel trailer buy. Just because a trailer looks sparkly clean and smells great from the inside, doesn't mean it will be your best choice. The following are top ten plus one things you should look for when inspecting a travel trailer (not necessarily in this order):

1. Towing vehicle - make sure your towing vehicle is able to support the weight of the trailer. Confirm that you are within the capacities of the trailer being towed. This can not be stressed enough. There are many trailers on the road that should not be towed by the vehicles that are towing them. This is very dangerous to you and vehicles around you and also the lifespan of your tow vehicle will be shortened.

2. Roof - the roof should be designed to keep water from leaking to the interior. Look for signs of water pooling.  If you see lots of sealant applied be sure to check around the ceiling inside for signs of water damage.

3. Bathroom - inspect the shower frame by grabbing a hold of it and seeing if it's possible to rattle the frame? Some showers look great but don't hold up to the rigors of bouncing when trailer is on the road. If there is a shower tub make sure it has water tight enclosures. For your health and comfort you need a small power fan for venting the roof. Make sure it is in working condition.

4. Overall cleanliness of the inside of trailer - are you satisfied with the upholstery and floors or will you have to spend money to update? You may have to spend a considerable amount of money if updating, keep that in mind when negotiating for a price.

5. Appliances, including the water heater - If you can, turn the appliances on and make sure they are in good working condition. Look and listen for anything that seems suspicious. Listen for strange noises while the appliance is running, does it have a funny smell, or does it appear to be damaged?

6. Batteries - make sure they can hold a full charge and look for corrosion and leakage.

7. Inside - walls, fans, windows, storage compartments: Look for signs of leakage, in many cases this comes in a form of stains on the ceiling, walls, inside drawers and the floor. Are the ceiling fans in good working condition?  Do the windows and doors open and close properly. You know there may be a problem if it is hard to close the door. Possible water leakage.

8. Converter - Most of equipment in a travel trailer are designed for 12-volt operation (except; microwave, air conditioner and anything plugged into 110 volt outlet).  Converter is necessary when plugged into 110 volt campsite line to convert the 110 volts to 12 volt to avoid burning out wiring on 12 volt appliances.

9. Lights/brake lights: Are all the turning lights and brake lights working properly?

10. Tires: Make sure they are highway safe. Look for cracking, signs of misalignment and excessive wear.

Take the time to do a little maintenance of your RV air conditioner.  A little work now may save you lots of time and money later!

The first thing to look at is the filter.  Dirty or clogged filters reduce air flow which can create freeze up, electrical, and efficiency problems. Also, dirty RV AC filters will allow dirt to get thru to the evaporator.  The filter should be checked once a month during the season.  Most filters are made of foam which are washable and reusable. Gently remove the filter and wash in warm water. Allow to air dry before reinstalling.  Replace damaged filters with the correct size and type for your air conditioners’ make and model.

Check the evaporator. Unclean filters can allow excessive contaminants to be pulled through and build up on the evaporator fins. The build up insulates the evaporator and reduces efficiency, and can cause the compressor to overheat.  You can usually see the evaporator from the inside of the RV when you remove the ceiling assembly and filters.  Wipe off dirt with slightly damp cloth if needed.  Dry before reassembling.

Next, climb on top of the RV and inspect the condenser fins.  Carefully straighten fins that have been bent or crushed. Remove debris or bugs caught in the fins.  This will increase efficiency by allowing better air circulation.  While on top of the RV, look at your shroud.  Check for cracks and make sure it is securely attached to the coach.

Plug your camper into a 30 amp outlet and turn on your air conditioner to test it.  It is important to run your AC using at least 30 amps. Using anything less may do serious damage to motors, compressors and other components by providing insufficient power. Run your RV air conditioner for at least a half hour to check the fan and controls.  Test cooling by placing a thermometer where the air is going into the filter, and one where the air is coming out.  There should be at least a 20 degree difference with the compressor running.

Problems found during this quick check should be diagnosed by a qualified RV mechanic, using the proper meters and tools. The RV air conditioner is a sealed unit, and can not be repaired except at a repair shop with technicians trained to work on them.
