Small Diesel generators
Building fire pump selection?
I'm overseeing a building refit and we'll need to install a fire pump. Most are recommending an electric pump, but that implies a much larger electric generator (100 kVA more). Also, we hadn't planned a generator in this first phase of the project.
Can anyone tell me what my other options are?? What about a diesel pump? Or a small temporary generator for phase I until the other phases are complete?
A 500 GPM, 100 psi pump will pull 55 horsepower and can be electric or Diesel. That flow will operate two standard 2 1/2" fire hoses. If you need the pump for a sprinkler system, that is another matter.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Labs. (UL) have fire protection criteria and standards for certification of special purpose fire pumps. Also check with your insurance carrier.
I suppose that you do have a source of water adequate to pump 500 GPM for an hour.

Yeah stuff sure is expensive out that way mate. But you've got to remember that there is no mains power, so its all diesel generators and all the water is either trucked in or de-sal down on the coast. Most of the supplies for Eucla actually come from Ceduna SA as its the closest major town! Bloody isolated spot.
