Via solar panel... To run a 250 watt appliance 24 hours, what total wattage (solar panel rating ) is needed?


I am planning for a 12V refrigerator in an RV and want to know what the suggested total solar panel wattage would be required to run continuously 24 hours a day.

depends on the number of hours of sunlight you can count on. Plus losses in the battery charge/discharge cycle. You will need a charge controller plus the solar panel has to provide at least 15 volts.

If you have 8 hours of sunlight, then you need 3x250 = 750 watts. To allow for losses, I'd plan for 1000 to 1500 watts. To hold enough for the 16 hours, the battery has to be 250W x 16 h = 4 kW, which would be at least 4 large lead acid batteries, 100 amp-hour size, probably more like 6.

If you plan on a few days with no sun, such as during a storm or cloudy days, then you need a lot more capacity plus a lot more batteries.

edit: that seems low power for a fridge. Also, note that a fridge cycles off and on depending on circumstances, so the average power may be a lot less than 250 watts
