Generator- snow buildup around air intake, ice on bottom of air filter- Should I be concerned?

I have snow buildup around the air intake of my generator due to a mild snow storm. I checked the air filter 2 hours into the storm and found the very bottom of the air filter was filled with ice. Most of the air filter was dry. Could serious damage be caused to the generator engine due to this?

I imagine worst case scenario some water would be pulled into the air intake and any impurities in the water would end up in the cylinder. I'm guessing any that land on the top of the cylinder or above the piston ring would not be removed by oil detergents but these are all guesses...

If anyone with engine experience can give me some insight I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.
Only problem with clearing snow away is that more is falling (one of the disadvantages of snow storms). I clear it away every hour or so but clearing each flake isn't practical.

Connor is correct. Remove the carb and there is a "bowl" on the bottom that is held on with a screw or small bolt. Empty the bowl. I believe you'll find some small amount of water there. Use an air compressor to blow out gas and water from the carb too. Put the bowl back on the carb and the carb assembly back on the engine. Top off the gas tank along with a 1/4 to 1/3 bottle of STP gas treatment. A new spark plug would be a good idea too. Start the engine up and it should run fine. It wouldn't hurt to put some plywood over or around the generator to keep the snow from getting in again. Also, be careful not to lose any small parts from the carb when you're working on it. I hope that helps.

why won't my 5kw generator stay running?

I have a 5000 watt generator that will not stay running. It has a 10 hp tecumseh engine with low oil shutoff. I was using it for 48 hrs and shut it down to replace the fuel filter and plug seeing how it is around 3 yrs old and never been changed. Started up and ran fine for another 8 or so hrs. I shut it down to refuel it and it started and shut down. It kept doing the same thing over and over. Finally the power came on so now I am working on it. I completely took apart the carb and cleaned it out. I checked the lines and I have fuel from the tank to the carb. ANY IDEAS??????

Could be the oil pressure cut off switch has gone bad.

Nah, it wasn't broken… it was on its way. So I pulled over as soon as I could and stopped the engine. When the AA man came once he heard the rattle he said he wouldn't do anything like revving the engine to help diagnose the fault for fear of doing more damage.

Hadn't experiecned that before, but did have an oil filter fail on me and I broke the big ends on a Cortina Mk II ;-)

This is my only truly hilarious story from high school: So I took Auto Shop in Junior and Senior year. Our teach, who could best be described as an ex-hippie ‘Nam Vet, looked like a cross between John Lennon and Willie Nelson, and probably smoked as much reefer as those two did combined. So one day he pulls into the bay in this ancient Diesel Mercedes, had to have been late ’70s, and he hold up the keys in the air until all the guys are quiet. In the past, he would usually toss the keys to some senior, and have them drive him and a few other kids out to get lunch. No such luck on this particular day. He tossed me the keys, and said “Change the oil. Rest of the class, come down to the cafeteria, let’s see what snacks are left.” So I go and pull this ancient barge forward, and climb down into the pit to start the oil change. It was then that I noticed that the oil drain plug had been *welded* to the oil pan. Looking around, I saw that the oil filter was at such an angle that if I started the engine, I could probably spray the oil out of the engine if I ran it for a few seconds, so, in my THC addled mind, I climbed up, jumped in the car, and started the engine. Jumping back down into the pit, I now saw that oil was **gushing** all over the place. I tried to catch it with a bucket but no go, it was everywhere, and I was covered in oil. Shut the engine off, put on a new filter, and refilled the motor. Shortly before finishing up the cleanup, the teacher and the other 12 guys in the class came back, all hooting and hollering because I was covered in oil. I told Vince (teach’s name) that the drain plug was welded on. He threw a TrollFace and was like, “You blew the oil out through the filter hole, didn’t you?” And I was like “Yeah?” and he says “You’re the first one to ever figure that out. The rest of these assholes would come back saying they couldn’t get the drain plug off.” Dick move, but still fun. TL;DR – Shop teacher made me change oil on a car with a welded drain plug, had to drain oil by running the engine, got covered in oil in the process.
