I had a heat pump, never had it serviced. It worked faithfully for 11 years, then quit. Cost to make the repair = $465. It's still working after 15 years. So I saved about $800 by not getting it serviced. The 2x yearly service call is strictly an income generating channel for the company.

But it really boils down to "Do you want to take the risk or not?"

By the way, I've yet to find an AC technician that REALLY knows how to fix an AC/Heat Pump unit. The above heat pump I had required 3 different techs before one found the problem. They all added freon and called it a fix. That same AC tech that fixed my heat pump failed to fix my daughter's AC. Heat Pumps and AC operate the same way. They teach techs in school that if this fails, replace that. If that fails, replace this. If it doesn't cool or ices up, add freon. They are not taught how to TROUBLESHOOT before making repairs. If you have a low freon level, find the leak first before adding freon.
