Is Coleman Powermate a decent brand of generator to buy?
Specifically, the 5500 watt (6875 surge) with the Tecumseh 11HP engine? Why don't they have the Yamaha anymore?
Coleman sold off the generator side of the company several years ago. Coleman Powermate had a lot of problems with the voltage regulator boards. If the generator uses a brushless alternator this will not be an issue. Tecumseh made good engines. Parts are still available but they no longer build small engines.
I'd consider the generator suitable for occasional use or emergency backup power during power outages. If you're looking for a daily use generator or for commercial purposes you should keep looking.
Proper maintenance is essential to ensure maximum life from your generator. Keep it clean and dry, perform routine oil and filter changes, keep the gas from getting stale and fouling the carburetor, and you will be pleased with its performance.
